The Story
behind the album...
Southern Americana troubadour, Dan Johnson, returns ten years after the release of his acclaimed debut with The Salt Cedar Rebels, with the highly anticipated follow-up: Salt Cedar Rebels II.
Known for weaving raw honesty with timeless, southern storytelling, Johnson has spent the last decade writing, performing, and honing his voice as both a musician and author. Now, he reunites the Salt Cedar Rebels sound with a new collection of songs that reflect years of growth, grit, and resilience.
“It’s more than just a sequel,” Johnson explains. “It’s a story about where I’ve been, what I’ve learned, and where I’m going. The first record introduced who we were — this one shows who we’ve become.”
The album builds on the signature country-rock sound of the original Salt Cedar Rebels, blending elements of Southern Americana, Outlaw Country, and heartfelt balladry. Fans can expect powerful storytelling, “reminiscent of Prine and Kristofferson” - Folking, with a decade of lived experience deepening the voice behind the songs.
A Long-Awaited Homecoming:
When Dan Johnson and The Salt Cedar Rebels first landed, it made its mark on the Texas music scene with its unapologetic honesty and notable poetry. Ten years later, SCRII feels like both a continuation and a fresh beginning.
Highlights from the record include “Six Flags Over Jesus,” a cutting rebuke of megachurch prosperity culture, written after Johnson was formally asked to leave the church for his criticisms. “Meanwhile in Mexico,” a tropical take on leaving behind the current culture of greed, hate, and division in the US. “Riding for the 26th,” a blazing homage to Dan's grandfather and the brave 26th Cavalry in the last horse-mounted charge in military history, during World War II.
Each song is a chapter in Johnson’s ongoing journey — from personal battles to hard-won wisdom, told in a way that feels universally human and unmistakably Texan.
Album Release & Availability:
Salt Cedar Rebels II will be released on vinyl as a special double album, with a 10-year anniversary re-release of the first SCR album on April 10th at midnight. The album will also hit all streaming and download platforms.
